Gartner’s prediction is probably accurate, but not for the reasons that doom the right agentic AI projects.

Most people do not quite understand the agents they are supposed to build. I’ve seen a lot of kind of dumb applications of agents that arise due to:

  1. A lack of good data infrastructure
  2. A misunderstanding of how agents should function and what they are good at
  3. Technical skills to actually build and integrate agents

There will probably be fewer random projects in the future, but this is okay – I mostly want to work on the cases where agents are obviously useful, so shaking out the speculative stuff is actually a good idea. Helps you learn what’s important in the agent world.

I’m curious what your take is?

If agent usage right now is a proxy for current AI startup space, then 40% failure rate IS pretty good considering that startup survival rate in general is 10-20%.

I’m convinced that agents are going to fundamentally change how we interact with computer systems, and will allow an order of magnitude more people to make use of complex systems that were previously unapproachable.

So, I am all in on agents. The big question is how long will it take for this disruption to happen.

My usual guess is 9-18 months.

The 9-18 month timeline tracks with what I’m seeing in Discord support.

Projects shipping to production right now:

  • Customer service agents with shared memory across team members
  • Coding assistants that learn project patterns over time
  • Research agents that build knowledge bases across sessions
  • Educational tutors that adapt to student learning patterns

Common pattern: These aren’t experiments. They’re solving real problems where persistence matters.

Projects struggling:

  • Trying to use stateful agents for simple RAG (overengineered)
  • Building “AI agents” that are really just chatbots with tool calling
  • POCs without clear success metrics
  • Expecting agents to magically handle edge cases without proper memory architecture

Cameron’s point about “workflow redesign vs. legacy integration” is crucial. The successful projects I see aren’t bolting agents onto existing systems - they’re rethinking the problem from scratch.

Example: Instead of “add an AI agent to our support ticket system,” successful teams ask “how would support work if we had a persistent AI coworker with institutional memory?” Completely different architecture.

I would say 5 to 10 years for them to become ubiquitous. Karpathy discusses the “decade of agents” in a recent interview. But there are going to be much earlier successes in specific markets.
